Tennis Court Repair: Filling Birdbaths or Puddles with Acrylic Patch Binder
One of the common problems found on asphalt tennis courts is surface depressions, also known in the tennis court construction industry as birdbaths. An asphalt tennis court should be properly constructed to have a slope of 1%. This allows water to drain off the court in a short amount of time after a rain. When a birdbath forms, the water is unable to drain out of the low area and will become standing water until it evaporates or is swept away. This is a problem for tennis players, and the long term performance of the acrylic surface. If water sits on the surface for long periods of time, it will break down the acrylic coating binder and shorten the life of the film. The industry rule of thumb, per the American Sports Builders Association, is to place a nickel in the center of a birdbath, one hour after a rain. If the water covers the head of the five cent piece, it needs to be patched.
Acrylic Patch Binder is used by professional tennis court contractors to level these areas. Patch Binder is mixed with Portland cement and sand to make a compatible, acrylic-bound slurry for filling and leveling depressions. This mixture is poured out and applied with a metal screed, similar to tools used in the concrete industry. The screed floats on the higher edges of asphalt, while the patch binder mix fills the low spot in the middle. While the material is still wet, a wet sponge can be used to feather the edges and transition the patch into the existing surface. Once the patching mix is dry, it can be scraped with a wide, metal floor scraper to remove excess material that collects around the edges. If the patches are rough or there are many areas on the court surface that have been filled, it is sometimes better to use a power floor machine with a sandpaper disc. Many sport surfacing contractors use these machines to provide a smooth transition from the patch to the surface, in a much shorter time than using a hand scraper.
If the tennis court surface has cracks, the patch binder mix can also be used as a crack repair material. Application can be performed with a putty knife, trowel, or a v-shaped squeegee. If the cracks are deeper than an inch, they can be filled with sand or foam backer rod, up to an inch from the surface. At that point, the patch binder mix can be used to fill up the remaining crack.
Once all surface repairs are complete, the court is ready for the resurfacing process. If the rest of the surface is in good condition, the repair areas can also be touched up with the colored surfacing products until the next full resurfacing is needed.
