Andy Roddick complains of running on empty ahead of US Open
Andy Roddick has raised concerns over his low energy levels just three weeks before the US Open will get under way.
“I haven’t been feeling quite right. I haven’t been feeling well for some weeks,” Roddick said. “I feel pretty lethargic and not quite as excitable as I normally am.
The American will have a health checkup and is considering taking a break ahead of the final grand slam of the season to determine the extent of the problem.
“Something doesn’t feel quite right. Maybe it could be a vitamin deficiency. We will have to take a look at that.”
Roddick has never lost to Malisse in nine career meetings, their last in the Australian Open first round last year. The Belgian took just over two hours to defeat Marchenko, the number 67 with three quarter-final showings this season.
Roddick said that hothouse afternoon conditions made the match a challenge. “This was a hot day, the States in summer is a hot place to play.
Roddick struck 15 aces against Ram, saved four break points and broke his compatriot on three of four occasions. Only last month, Roddick beat Ram in straight sets in the first round at Wimbledon.”I feel like I didn’t do one thing right tonight,” Roddick said. “I don’t think it would have mattered who I would have played in the draw tonight.”
“I promise you I’m going to figure this out. That is not what I built my reputation on.”
While uncertain of his immediate plans, Roddick said, “First and foremost I’m going to test for something. I’m going to get that off my plate first.
Second seed Roddick’s revelation came on a night when Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych struggled into the quarter-finals, downing Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, in a rematch of a first-round Wimbledon meeting.
“Everything I’m trying to do is get 100 per cent ready for the US Open – get rhythm back, win a couple matches and hit full throttle in New York.”
